19:30-21:00 Artist talk with the artist Esther Shalev-Gerz in Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center

Place: Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center, Obraztsova St., 11, build. 1A, Moscow
Place of art. Meeting with artist Esther Shalev-Gerz.

We would like to invite you to the meeting with artist Esther Shalev-Gerz. The meeting is devoted to geographical and sociocultural aspects of the notion called «place of art».

Esther Shalev-Gerz is a contemporary Israeli artist who lives and works in Paris. Creating monuments, installations, video and sculptures, Shalev-Gerz explored the notions of time, memory and history. Together with Jochen Gerz she created «Monument against facism» in Hamburg. Also, Shalev-Gerz explores the understanding of artistic work as a social practice.

Within the project «Place of art» Esther Shalev-Gerz asked artists how they understood art and where it took place. Therefore, artists created their own map and at the same time tried to look at artistic process from the outside.

In the meeting we will discuss how artists and researchers understand the artistic process itself. Where does art take place nowadays? How does geographical and sociocultural dimensions of the place of art interact with each other? Is it possible to talk about the place of art without referring to physical space?

The discussion will bring together Esther Shalev-Gerz and the research group of the Moscow project «Place of art»: Amal Avezdzhanova, Victoria Belonenko, Maria Buneeva, Maria Korchagina, Polina Lukina, Tatiana Mironova, Christina Pestova and Natalia Smolianskaia. «Place of art» is an online archive of Moscow exhibitions and also a platform for discussing contemporary curating.

The discussion takes place as a part of HSE conference «Theories and practices of art and design: sociocultural, economic and political contexts».
